What is a JBG (JBIG) file?
A JBG file is an image format based on JBIG (Joint Bi-level Image Experts Group) compression. It is designed specifically for black-and-white (1-bit) images, making it highly efficient for documents with text, line art, or scanned pages. Because of its excellent lossless compression, JBG files are widely used in fax systems, document imaging, and printers.
Compared to older formats like G3 and G4, JBG provides smaller file sizes with better quality.
How to open a JBG file?
JBG files can be opened using specialized or advanced viewers, including:
XnView MP
IrfanView (with plugins)
GIMP
ImageMagick
Most default image viewers do not support JBG files natively.
How to convert a JBG file?
To improve compatibility, JBG files are often converted to:
JBG → JPG
JBG → PNG
JBG → PDF
JBG → TIFF
Conversion preserves document clarity while making files easier to share.
